Saltwater flies: shrimp, crab and baitfish patterns
( number of products: 54 )Saltwater flies imitate mobile coastal prey such as shrimp, crabs and small baitfish. Our range includes Clouser-style minnows, Bendback and deep-minnow profiles, Crazy Charlie-style flies, crabs, prawns and shrimp patterns. Select the fly by target species, prey, water depth and bottom type, then confirm that its hook and size suit the intended environment.

Choose the prey form first
On a flat or shallow coast, visible fish and local food give the clearest clues. Shrimp and prawn patterns can be moved in short pulses or allowed to settle; crab patterns are normally presented close to the bottom with restrained movement; minnows are retrieved to suggest escaping or disoriented baitfish.
Main constructions in this category
- Clouser-style and deep minnows use weighted eyes and sparse wings to descend and travel with a jigging path.
- Bendback-style flies position the hook and wing to help the pattern pass through some vegetation and shallow structure, although they are not snag-proof.
- Crazy Charlie-style flies combine a compact body, wing and eyes for small shrimp or baitfish presentations.
- Shrimp and prawn flies emphasise segmentation, translucent fibres, legs and controlled movement.
- Crab flies use a broader profile intended for bottom-oriented feeding.
Weight and landing attitude
Eye material and position affect more than sink rate. They influence whether a fly rides hook-point up, lands abruptly or settles with a level body. Choose only enough weight for the depth and current. Around grass, coral or rock, accuracy and control may be more useful than maximum descent.
Colour and contrast
Tan, olive, grey and translucent bodies provide natural coastal colours; white and pearl suggest a bright baitfish belly; chartreuse, orange and darker backs increase contrast. Match the visible prey when possible and account for bottom colour and water clarity.
Hooks, leaders and care
Not every fly sold for saltwater uses identical hook material or corrosion protection. Check the product specification and replace any damaged hook. Rinse used flies and tackle in fresh water after salt exposure, dry them fully before storage and select leader strength for the target species, structure and fly size.
