Specialist fly-tying tools and bench accessories

( number of products: 83 )

This category brings together specialist fly-tying tools and bench equipment outside the principal groups of vices, bobbin holders, scissors, hackle pliers and finishing tools. The range includes hair stackers, bodkins and threaders, dubbing brushes, hackle guards, wing cutters, organisers, tool bases, lights, magnifiers, vice accessories and implements for dressing tube flies.

Tools for preparing materials

Hair stackers align fibre tips before a wing, tail or packed head is formed. Combs, rakes and brushes remove underfur, separate fibres and tease out a completed dubbing body. Material clips retain feathers and fibres away from the working area, while hackle guards hold swept fibres back when the head and finishing knot are made.

Bodkins, threaders and thread tools

A dubbing needle or bodkin can separate fibres, clear a hook eye, place a small amount of varnish and make precise adjustments to material. A threader draws tying thread through a bobbin tube, while a thread splitter prepares a gap for dubbing in the split-thread technique. Half-hitch tools are sometimes combined with a bodkin and help finish a fly where working space is restricted.

Shaping and repeatability

Wing cutters and burners help produce repeatable shapes from feathers or synthetic sheets. Hook and hackle gauges support consistent proportions, while extended-body tools and multi-point work platforms assist with more complex constructions. Rotary fly driers are useful when varnish, resin or another coating needs to cure evenly around a fly or a small component.

Bench organisation and vice accessories

Spool stands, magnetic bases, hook and bead trays and tool organisers reduce clutter and make small components easier to locate. Lamps and magnifiers improve visibility around compact hooks. Arms, clamps, bases, supports and contrast plates extend particular vices, so compatibility with the exact vice model should be checked before purchase.

The “Other tools” group covers products with very different purposes. The most useful way to choose is to identify the task that needs improvement: preparing hair, handling thread, controlling proportions, dressing tube flies, curing completed patterns or organising the tying bench.
