Dr Slick 4.75 Ceramic Bobbin
Dr Slick 4.75 Ceramic Bobbin is a conventional fly-tying bobbin with an extended frame, intended especially for bulky, long or awkward patterns, including flies tied on long shanks and saltwater patterns. Its 4.75-inch frame provides additional working reach when carrying thread around built-up sections of a fly. Tension comes from the pressure of the spring arms rather than a dial or disc-drag mechanism.
The thread path uses two funnel-shaped ceramic inserts positioned at the inlet and outlet of the tube. These smooth contact points reduce abrupt changes of direction and friction on the thread, particularly as the bobbin is rotated around the hook shank. Stainless-steel and brass construction gives the tool a stable feel, while Delrin feet support the spool and promote smooth rotation. The result is controlled thread delivery and repeatable resistance from one wrap to the next.
Before tying, seat the spool evenly between the feet and check that it turns without binding or excessive side play. Resistance is adjusted only by making a small, careful change to the spacing of the arms: the spool should release thread smoothly without overrunning. Inspect both ceramic inserts periodically and keep the thread path clean, as contamination or damage can affect thread handling.
