FFGene Ceramic Bobbin Holder
FFGene Ceramic Bobbin Holder is a conventional fly-tying bobbin holder fitted with a ceramic insert at the outlet of its metal thread tube. The thread runs over the smooth ceramic surface at the point where it remains in constant contact with the tool during winding. This reduces friction and the risk of fraying or weakening the thread, an especially useful feature when working with fine tying threads and making precise wraps.
The spool is held between the end fittings of two spring arms. Pressure from these arms creates resistance as the spool turns, helping the tier maintain controlled thread tension. This is a standard spring-frame design without a slider or disc-drag mechanism. With the spool fitted correctly, it should rotate smoothly but retain noticeable resistance, preventing unwanted unwinding and keeping the thread under control between successive wraps.
Before tying, seat the spool holes on the arm fittings and check how freely the spool rotates. If the fit is too loose or too tight, gently and symmetrically alter the spacing of the spring arms in small increments, checking the resistance after each adjustment. Feed the thread through the tube toward the ceramic outlet. Correct spool fit supports even thread delivery and more repeatable control throughout the tying process.
Construction and operation
- Complete bobbin holder for fly-tying thread
- Ceramic insert at the tube outlet
- Spring arms that retain the spool
- Tension produced by spool fit and arm pressure
