FFGene Goose Shoulders
FFGene Goose Shoulders are loose goose shoulder feathers used to construct wings and other coloured fly components. In traditional tying they are valued as a smaller, delicate material for salmon flies. Individual feathers can be combined into mixed wings for classic full-dressed patterns such as Jock Scott and Black Dog, and they can form coloured bands in flies such as Alexandra. Their delicate structure produces clean, light bundles and allows several colours to be combined in one design. Select each feather for the planned wing length and width.
Construction and use
The material comes from the shoulder part of a goose wing and serves primarily in wing components. Fine fibres arrange readily into a bundle, while even tips help create a balanced profile. When selecting a pair, choose feathers with similar shapes for both sides of the wing. Limited thread wraps help preserve the material’s delicate form.
- Material: loose goose shoulder feathers.
- Use: mixed salmon-fly wings and coloured strips.
- Working character: the delicate structure helps form light, tidy bundles.
- Practical tip: even the tips and use moderate thread pressure.
