Greys GR80 Fly Rod
This version of the Greys GR80 was introduced in the brand’s catalogue as new for the 2020 season. It represented a substantial update to the earlier range, bringing 3M Powerlux 1000 resin into a high-modulus carbon-fibre construction. Greys brought single-handed and double-handed fly rods together under the GR80 name, with shared blank technology and a progressive, fast-actioned character.
The family covered a broad spread of river and stillwater fly fishing. Its single-handed branch addressed trout and predator fishing as well as lighter salmon applications, while the double-handed rods extended the range into modern salmon fishing. The result was a varied programme of purpose-specific rods built around the same core carbon and resin system.
Construction and series character
The defining feature shared across the family is its high-modulus carbon-fibre blank incorporating 3M Powerlux 1000 resin. Powerlux uses nano-sized spherical particles small enough to sit between individual carbon filaments, helping to form a dense and more uniform resin matrix. Greys associated this technology with blanks that could be made lighter and stronger than standard carbon-fibre constructions. For the GR80 family, the stated result was a combination of low weight and refined actions with increased strength and impact resistance.
GR80 blanks have progressive flex and a fast-actioned character. This profile runs through both the single-handed and double-handed parts of the family despite their different roles. The single-handed range was described in terms of precision, speed and power, while the double-handed range placed emphasis on smooth casting sequences and the reserves required for salmon fishing. Together they share the light, responsive character assigned to this Powerlux generation.
Alignment marks at the joints provide a clear reference when assembling the rod and setting the guides in line. Each rod was also supplied in a hard, internally partitioned tube that keeps its components organised during storage and transport.
