Greys Tail Fly Reel
Greys Tail is a family of fly reels intended for freshwater fishing. Features shared by the complete reels include a large-arbour spool, a sealed disc drag and a mechanism that can be converted for either left- or right-hand retrieve. This combination suits measured line management as well as situations in which slack must be recovered promptly or a running fish controlled through the drag.
The main structure is made from die-cast aluminium. After casting, the components undergo two separate machining stages to remove surplus metal and produce a more precisely finished profile. This process gives the series its compact, technical form while retaining the practical economy of a cast construction. Large porting also has a functional role, allowing air to reach the fly line and backing more readily after fishing.
Construction and series character
The broad core of the large-arbour spool gathers more line with each turn of the handle than a narrow-core design. It therefore helps the angler recover loose line quickly and restore contact with the tackle. The broad winding surface also keeps the line in less tightly formed coils. Retrieve direction can be changed to suit left- or right-hand winding, allowing the reel to be set up around the angler’s established handling preference.
Drag pressure is managed by a sealed disc system with carbon friction elements. The drag knob provides progressive adjustment to suit the tackle and the changing demands of a fight, while the disc arrangement releases line smoothly under load. Enclosing the mechanism limits direct exposure of its working surfaces to water and debris. The available drag force and the surface treatment specified for different water conditions depend on the selected reel version.
- Construction: die-cast aluminium finished through two separate machining processes.
- Drag: sealed disc system with carbon friction components.
- Spool: large-arbour design for rapid line retrieval, with porting that assists drying.
- Handling: convertible between left- and right-hand retrieve.
