Griffin Montana Mongoose Vise
Griffin Montana Mongoose Vise is a complete cam-operated fly-tying vise with true 360° rotary action. Its tempered-steel jaws are designed for hooks from 4/0–28, allowing the same head to cover a broad range of patterns, from larger streamers to small nymphs and dry flies. The cam lever can be locked in either a forward or rearward position. This lets you select the arrangement that provides better access to the hook and reduces interference between your hand or tools and the jaw mechanism.
Jaw-height adjustment allows the hook shank to be aligned with the axis of rotation. Once correctly centred, the fly can be turned without a pronounced change in height, making it easier to inspect the far side of a pattern and apply thread, tinsel, wire or body materials evenly. A rotation lock screw holds the head stationary when a fixed working position is required, while the fine tension screw adjusts resistance during rotation. The Delrin bearing block supports smooth movement, and the extension handle provides the option of a longer rotary lever. After changing to a substantially different hook size or shape, check the head height and alignment again before continuing.
The set provides two mounting options: a C-clamp and a freestanding pedestal base. The clamp is suited to a permanent bench and work involving greater thread tension, provided that the bench edge has a suitable shape and sufficient strength. The pedestal makes the vise easier to reposition and can be used on surfaces where a clamp cannot be fitted. Also included are a bobbin cradle, material clip, Supreme bobbin and hackle gauge. Before tying, check that the stem and head are secure and confirm that the hook does not move in the jaws. With the smallest hooks, position the bend carefully so that the jaw tips leave as much working room as possible around the eye and shank.
