Hardy Marquis LWT Fly Reel
The Hardy Marquis LWT is a modern reworking of the classic Marquis reel, retaining its traditional operation and distinctive click-check action. Across the series, the available reels cover trout and grayling fishing, heavier single-handed outfits and salmon applications. Their shared character comes from a straightforward mechanical check, suited to anglers who value direct control of the line and clear audible feedback when a fish takes line.
Each reel is made in Alnwick, England, from machined 6061 aluminium bar stock. The components are hand-finished and protected by an anodised surface. Compared with the earlier Marquis pattern, the frame and spool use revised porting to remove material while preserving the familiar proportions of the design. The indented regulator is neatly integrated into the reel body, giving the fingers a positive point of contact while keeping the control relatively unobtrusive.
Construction and series character
The frame and spool retain a classically proportioned, heavily ported layout with a traditional arbor. This produces the established Marquis style of line retrieval and leaves the spool rim accessible when additional hand pressure is useful during a fight. The spool can be removed for exchange with another prepared spool or for routine cleaning. Retrieve can also be configured for either left- or right-hand winding.
Resistance is provided by a traditional click-check mechanism, in which a pawl and spring act against the spool’s check wheel. The regulator alters the tension of this system, and the revised generation provides a broader adjustment range for setting the initial resistance more precisely. Its open, mechanically uncomplicated arrangement is accessible once the spool has been removed, making inspection and the removal of dirt straightforward without dismantling an enclosed drag cartridge.
