Hardy Sovereign Fly Reel
Hardy Sovereign is the modern reissue of a fly-reel family first conceived in 1987 and produced until the end of the 1990s. The current generation retains the distinctive enclosed styling of the earlier reels while applying contemporary machining methods. Each reel is made in Alnwick, England. The series is intended chiefly for freshwater fly fishing and suits anglers who want traditional reel architecture combined with an adjustable disc drag.
The body and spool are engineered from bar-stock aluminium and protected by a deep-anodised finish. Construction centres on a solid backplate and a half-cage frame that partly surrounds the spool. A ported spool face reduces the amount of material while preserving the recognisable Sovereign appearance. Its standard arbor gives line retrieval a measured, traditional character, consistent with the reel’s heritage-led design.
Construction and series character
The operating controls are deliberately straightforward. Retrieve can be converted between left- and right-hand winding with a selector lever and no tools are required. This allows the complete reel to be adapted to the angler’s preferred winding hand without dismantling the drag assembly. The spool, solid backplate and compact controls retain the visual language of the historic Sovereign family, while the machined and anodised aluminium provides the working structure of the present reel.
Fish control is handled by a self-lubricating disc-drag system with a Rulon friction component, adjusted through the rear drag knob. When line is leaving the reel, the check mechanism can provide the characteristic Sovereign click; a separate button silences this outgoing sound while leaving the adjustable drag in operation. The drag is unsealed, so the reel should be cleaned after exposure to grit or sediment. Following any contact with salt water, it should be rinsed thoroughly in fresh water and allowed to dry before storage.
