Hardy Ultradisc UCL Fly Reel

The Hardy Ultraclick UCL is a lightweight fly reel developed for delicate trout and grayling fishing. Its character suits outfits using a fine fly line, a long leader or a leader-only system. This makes the series relevant to both fine dry-fly presentation and nymphing methods in which a very thin section of line or leader extends beyond the rod tip.

The frame and spool are precision-machined from aluminium and have an anodised finish. Extensive porting reduces the amount of material while retaining a full frame around the spool. Resistance is provided by an adjustable all-metal click-check mechanism. This straightforward system is intended for light-line fishing and gives distinct audible and tactile feedback as line is paid out or retrieved.

Construction and series character

The enclosed frame surrounds the edge of the spool and forms a continuous line guard. It helps keep fine line and leader material from entering the gap between the spool and frame, a useful feature for Euro nymphing and other methods based on long, thin leaders. The spool has a broad, large-arbour core to support efficient line retrieval. It is mounted directly and uses a push-off release, so changing between prepared lines involves exchanging the complete spool.

A regulator knob on the rear of the frame adjusts the resistance of the metal click-check: clockwise rotation increases resistance and anti-clockwise rotation reduces it. The mechanism has a marked operating range and should be returned to its minimum setting for storage. The reel can be converted from left- to right-hand wind by removing the spool and cover plate, then rotating the spring and pawl assembly. As the click-check is an open, serviceable mechanism, Hardy recommends periodic rinsing, careful drying and lubrication at the specified contact points.
