Negnon Calypso Titan Gray Fly Reel
Negnon Calypso Titan Gray has the kind of visual appeal that comes from confident proportions and carefully machined material. Its broad, titanium-grey frame gives the reel a composed, technical character; large openings reveal the spool structure, while blue, light-olive, purple or red accents create depth and contrast. Close up, the precision of the machining becomes apparent. On the rod, it is the large, uncluttered silhouette that commands attention.
Calypso was created for nymph fishing and Euro nymphing, but its diameter deliberately moves beyond the usual proportions of reels intended for light lines. Both models are large for the line sizes they carry. This is more than a matter of appearance: the broad core stores line in gentler coils, each rotation retrieves more of it, and the reel balances naturally with the long rods used for precise nymph presentation.
Construction and series character
The entire metal structure — body, full frame and spool — is machined from 6061 aluminium on four-axis CNC equipment. Wide openings remove material where it is not required and reveal the geometric structure of the spool. The titanium-grey finish unifies the shape, while the colour within allows a choice between restrained and expressive combinations without altering the reel’s working character.
The full frame surrounds the spool rim around its complete circumference. When a fine nymphing line or long leader is used, it helps prevent the material entering the gap between spool and body. This small construction detail makes a practical difference, particularly when slack is being retrieved, line released and the working length of the set-up altered in quick succession.
Calypso No. 1 measures 100 mm in diameter and holds a WF5F line with 75 m of 20 lb backing. It gives light and medium nymphing outfits the benefits of a large spool without taking away their finesse. Calypso No. 2 increases to 107 mm and accommodates a WF7F line with 100 m of 20 lb backing. It remains thoroughly at home on the river, but its greater capacity extends its role beyond nymphing: it is equally suited to stillwater fishing with full fly lines and casts made over longer distances.
The Ultra Large Arbor design speeds up line recovery and reduces line memory, while a sealed disc drag with graphite friction discs provides smooth control of resistance during a fight. Calypso Titan Gray does not sacrifice function for visual effect. Its appearance is created by its function: the broad diameter, enclosed frame, boldly opened spool and accurately machined aluminium.
