Rio Bonefish Fly Line

RIO Bonefish is a floating weight-forward fly line developed for bonefish and other species encountered on shallow flats. The family comprises WF7F, WF8F and WF9F variants. Its profile is aimed chiefly at the more experienced flats angler who wants to maintain an orderly loop, extend line efficiently and make a prompt follow-up presentation when a cruising fish changes direction or the first opportunity does not produce the required angle.

Profile and fishing use

A long head combined with a long rear taper provides a smooth transfer of energy through the cast. In practical terms, this helps the angler control loop shape and carry more line steadily in the air when a presentation must be made at distance across open water. The taper is also designed to load a fly rod at close range, an important characteristic when a fish appears near the boat or angler and there is little time or space in which to build the cast.

The mid-length front taper transfers energy into the leader and turns over the flies typically used for bonefish. This balances positive turnover with a controlled presentation rather than relying on an abrupt front profile. The same arrangement supports a fast second-shot cast: the extended rear section helps keep the loop stable, while the front taper helps redirect and deliver the fly ahead of a moving fish without unnecessarily lengthening the casting sequence.

• Line type: floating weight-forward fly line.
• Family range: WF7F, WF8F and WF9F.
• Taper: long head and rear taper with a mid-length front taper.
• Coating: SlickCast, designed for a smooth surface and line durability.

The high-floating running line is intended to resist sinking and the additional drag that a submerged running section can create as the next cast begins. This makes it easier to lift the line from the surface and retain an efficient rhythm when a quick change of direction or a second presentation is needed. SlickCast coating supports smooth travel through the rod guides while contributing to the durability of the line surface. RIO Bonefish therefore suits the flats angler who favours the control and loop stability of a longer head rather than a short, aggressive profile, while still requiring the rod to load for close opportunities and the line to respond quickly when casting again to a cruising fish.
