Sage Arbor XL Fly Reel
The Sage Arbor XL is a fly-reel family developed for fast, changeable fights in which a fish may run hard before turning back towards the angler. Its defining layout combines an extra-large-diameter frame with an ultra-large arbor, allowing the reel to recover slack quickly and restore direct contact with the fish. This makes the series suitable for demanding freshwater and saltwater fishing.
The reel is fully machined from 6061-T6 aluminium. The alloy is cold-forged and tempered to provide the rigidity required by the open, extensively ported construction. A hard-anodised finish protects the surface against wear and improves corrosion resistance, an important consideration when the reel is used regularly in changing conditions.
Construction and series character
The extra-large frame and broad spool core increase the amount of line recovered with each turn; Sage specifies a 15% faster pick-up rate. A narrow spool encourages the line to spread evenly with less need for deliberate level-winding by hand. The concave, ported arbor is designed to combine capacity with strength. A screw-tight spool lock uses a knurled locknut, providing a secure grip when removing or refitting the spool.
The SCS disc drag uses carbon friction components and is sealed against water, sand, grit and salt. Its One Revolution drag knob covers the adjustment range within a single turn, with 20 numbered references and 39 positive detented positions. The detents and audible clicks make measured changes easier and help the angler return to a familiar setting. An ergonomic handle supports positive winding, while the retrieve can be converted from left- to right-hand operation.
