Sage ESN Fly Reel
The Sage ESN is a purpose-designed reel for European nymphing techniques, where fine-diameter lines or long, delicate leaders are commonly used. Its layout supports rapid line recovery and a quick transition from controlling the rig by hand to playing a fish from the reel. The full-frame construction helps keep fine material from passing between the spool and the frame, an especially useful feature when fishing mono rigs or low-volume nymphing lines.
The reel is fully machined from cold-forged and tempered 6061-T6 aluminium. Its hard-anodised finish protects the surface and provides additional corrosion resistance. A defining feature of the series is its adjustable balance system. The supplied stainless-steel weights can be combined, while an indexable plate allows their position relative to the reel axis to be moved forwards or backwards. This enables the balance point of the complete outfit to be tuned for a Euro-nymphing or conventional fly rod.
Construction and series character
The narrow spool is intended for small-volume ESN lines. Its broad, large-arbor core increases the rate of line pick-up, while the slim profile reduces the need to guide line across the spool by hand. The concave, ported arbor forms a rigid structure, and the full frame keeps a fine line or leader within the reel’s outline. A screw-tight spool lock with a knurled nut provides a secure closure and a positive surface to grip with the fingers.
Sage’s SCS disc drag uses carbon components within a sealed housing that protects the mechanism from water, sand and fine grit. The drag knob covers its adjustment range in a single revolution; numbered markings, tactile detents and audible clicks make it easier to return to a previously used setting. The layout also permits a quick change from light resistance while stripping or recovering line to a firmer setting for playing a fish. Retrieve can be converted easily from left-hand to right-hand winding.
