Sage R8 Fly Rod

Sage introduced the R8 Core fly-rod family in 2022 as the beginning of a new material platform, the company’s first since KonneticHD appeared in 2016. The series continues Sage’s established concept of fast, multi-application rods, with its design brief centred on versatility, blank feedback and control in practical fishing situations.

R8 Core was developed for circumstances in which a single rod is expected to cover a broader range of techniques and changing conditions. Sage positions the family at the centre of its varied freshwater offering, covering demands that extend from controlled presentation and fly-line management to more forceful fishing systems. Every rod in the series shares the Multi-Application fast-action concept and Revolution 8 material technology.

Construction and series character

Revolution 8 technology combines a proprietary composite with increased hoop strength and a nano-sintered resin system. The additional hoop strength enabled Sage’s designers to increase the blank diameter more rapidly from the tip towards the lower section. The resin system raises axial resilience and allows a denser concentration of fibres within the blank structure. Together, these elements create a stiffer, stronger lower blank while retaining a sensitive tip and a clearly connected flow of feedback between the angler’s hand, the blank, the fly line and the fly.

The fast action is tuned to flex more deeply and communicate more of the loading process to the caster. Its character combines line speed with loop control, a perceptible casting rhythm and effective manipulation of the line once it reaches the water. The breadth described by Sage encompasses dry-fly, nymph and streamer fishing, together with techniques involving roll casts, line lifts and precise mends.

Shared finishing details include the Silver Pine blank colour, Slate primary thread wraps with graduated white and grey trim, Fuji ceramic stripping guides, hard-chromed snake guides and a matching tip-top. Each rod is supplied with a black rod bag featuring a cord-lock closure and an aluminium tube finished with a Sage medallion.
