Sage Thermo Fly Reel
Sage Thermo is a family of fly reels built for demanding encounters with large, fast-running fish. Its intended setting is saltwater, from big-game flats fishing to open bluewater, where the reel may be subjected to sustained loads and the drag must remain controlled throughout a long run. The design is suited to pursuits including tarpon, giant trevally, sharks and powerful pelagic species.
The body, spool and rigid frame are made from fully machined 6061-T6 aluminium. Sage uses cold-forged and tempered components to create a structure suited to intensive boat fishing. Both frame and spool are designed around the loads and occasional knocks encountered when working from a deck. A large, ergonomically shaped handle provides a positive grip when recovering line under pressure.
Construction and series character
The large-arbor spool retrieves line quickly when a fish changes direction or runs back towards the boat. Its broad core has a concave, ported profile and forms part of the reel’s substantial spool assembly. A quick-change mechanism is combined with a screw-tight spool lock and a knurled locking nut that offers a secure purchase during removal and fitting. The retrieve can be converted easily between left- and right-hand operation.
Fish control is handled by Sage’s fully sealed SCS disc drag, built around large carbon brake discs. The friction material absorbs energy during sustained runs and dissipates the resulting heat, supporting smooth engagement and consistent, repeatable drag pressure. Sealing isolates the working parts from water, sand, grit and salt. The large drag knob covers its adjustment range within a single revolution. Numbered positions, positive detents and audible clicks make changes easy to judge and allow a chosen setting to be reproduced without relying on guesswork.
