UTC Wire
UTC Wire is copper wire for constructing artificial flies. It can be used for ribbing, adding weight, creating wire bodies, introducing flash, or twisting with dubbing to form a Brush-style material. The larger size is also suitable when a stronger rib or a complete wire body is required, including the popular Copper John fly designed by John Barr. The wire is described as non-tarnishing, helping it retain a consistent surface during tying and use.
Construction and use
Choose the wire size according to the job: a finer application can define segmentation or add a small flash detail, while a larger one can form a more substantial body or contribute more weight. For ribbing, wrap from the tail toward the eye with even spacing and steady tension. When the winding is complete, cut the wire carefully and secure the end with thread so the finish remains tidy and the tying thread is not disturbed.
- Material type: Copper fly-tying wire.
- Functions: Ribbing, weighting, flash and wire bodies.
- Additional use: Twisting with dubbing for Brush-style material.
- Pattern example: Ribbing or body material for Copper John.
