Wapsi Deer Belly Hair
Wapsi Deer Belly Hair is a hair patch of long, strongly flaring deer belly hair. It is used for muddler heads and as a supporting material in streamers and salmon flies. The fibres can be spun, tied in bundles or shaped with scissors and a blade.
Construction and use
Remove the underfur and shorter fibres from a cut bundle, then level the tips in a hair stacker. For a muddler head, secure successive bunches around the hook shank so the hair spreads evenly, then shape the head with scissors or a razor. Smaller bunches can be tied in as a wing, tail or stabilising component.
- Material: long, clean deer belly hair with strong flare under thread pressure.
- Form: hair patch for cutting bundles to the required length.
- Technique: spin the hair, tie it around the shank and clip the resulting head.
- Uses: muddler heads, streamer heads, and supporting details in salmon and pike flies.
