Wapsi Foam Cylinders. Hoppers. 1/8 in Foam consists of foam cylinders with an exact 1/8-inch diameter; each piece is over 1 inch long. The larger cross-section is suited to fuller hopper bodies, extended bodies and segmented fly bodies that need a more substantial profile.

Construction and use

Choose the length for the fly size and cut the cylinder with a sharp knife or scissors. The ends can be shaped lightly, and segment positions can be marked as the material is tied in. Secure it with controlled, broad thread wraps, keeping the thread from cutting into the foam. A thread base or compatible adhesive may stabilise a joint when the pattern calls for one. The larger diameter provides a fuller profile and more buoyant material, but the behaviour of the complete fly also depends on its hook, eyes, added materials and total weight.
