The Medium format suits medium-sized constructions where the post provides an orderly point for hackle winding without cutting a component from sheet foam. It is a ready-made part that is tied directly onto a prepared thread base.

Construction and use

Set the post upright and secure it with broad wraps of thread rather than pulling one tight turn into the foam. This spreads the pressure and helps prevent the soft material from being cut. Once the post is stable, wind the hackle around its axis and finish the thread at the base. The piece can be coloured with a permanent artist marker before tying to match the pattern. The flotation of the finished fly depends on its complete dressing, not on the post alone.
