Wapsi SLF Kaufmann consists of blends developed by Randall Kaufmann, a well-known fly tier and designer of aquatic insect patterns. The series is aimed particularly at stonefly nymphs and scud imitations, making it a focused choice for abdomens, thoraxes and bodies that need a convincing mix of colour rather than a flat, uniform finish. Its strength is this clear pattern direction: it is made for building the types of flies Kaufmann is known for, not simply for general-purpose dressing. Apply it to waxed thread in small pinches, adding material gradually so the profile stays neat and properly proportioned.
Construction and use
Use SLF Kaufmann to match the varied tones found in scud and stonefly patterns. It can be shaped into slim segmented abdomens or fuller thoraxes, depending on how tightly it is spun.
