Wapsi Synthetic Yak Hair
Wapsi Synthetic Yak Hair is a long synthetic fibre material for building substantial streamer wings, tails, and profiles. The material is 20 inches long, allowing individual fibres to be matched to large flies or trimmed for smaller patterns. It can serve as a synthetic substitute for bucktail, and several strands can also be twisted together to form a compact body element.
Construction and use
Select a small, even bundle and secure it on the hook shank. For an airy wing, keep the fibres loosely arranged; for a compact body, twist several strands together before tying them down. The material can be layered, tapered, and trimmed to shape. When using larger bundles, keep the tie-in point controlled so the fly does not become unnecessarily bulky.
- Streamer wings – the long fibres build a full, flowing profile.
- Popper and bass-fly tails – forms a substantial synthetic tail section.
- Bucktail substitute – suits streamers in a range of sizes.
- Fibre bodies – twisted strands create a tight element for selected trout patterns.
